Technically what you call a boot grab, is actually more of a Japan. When you tweak the board behind you it becomes a different trick. Kind of how a method is grabbed in approximately the same location as a melon, but it is totally different. Japans are acceptable, especially if done on a mctwist (see Kazu or Danny Davis). Come to think of it, someone should do them on a scarecrow… (will eat poop when I attempt this next time I ride) http://snowboarding.transworld.net/videos/snowboa…
Japans are more than acceptable, they're dope! But do you see where harrisons hand is on the japan grab in the link? Its on the board, not the boot. Look, i dont hate the guy, but he grabs boot and tindy a lot, some people might like it, fine, but i dont think it looks good. I do agree it would look sick on a scarecrow tho!
Anything you're criticizing as a boot grab is either right on it (one time) or directly inside of it, which is Ok. Some folks who are grabbing in between the feet are stinking bugging it and it doesn't look that cool anyway. There's an image of jamie lynn doing a method from the 90s that is grabbed "front foot proper" (exact caption quotation, board is grabbed directly in front of the front foot). Wakeboarding is not too cool for whatever Jamie Lynn has done, ever.
Derek cook looks bad ass on a wakeboard…quite frankly he reminds me of late 90s scott jobe or josh smith any time.
Oh geeze, sorry if the references are too old to be credible with you youngsters.
Some people can't see the forrest for the trees. Rules, especially style rules can be broken. Grabs out of laziness are one thing, but when you are dropping tricks that unique and weird any grab is just gravy.

@buttchug Post up your riding then. I'm sure it's super fresh and not exactly like what everyone else is doing.

He had the handle in his wrist so he was able to unwrap and grab the board with the handle hand.
