50th Anniversary Documentary – Honoring with Innovation
This year marks a special milestone for Centurion Boats as they celebrate 50 years of making waves and pushing boundaries in the water sports industry. To honor this golden anniversary, they’ve released a documentary, “Honoring with Innovation,” that takes a deep look at their journey, the people behind the brand, and the spirit that keeps them going.
From Speedboats to Surf Machines: The Centurion Story
Centurion wasn’t born in a sterile boardroom. It all started back in 1976, fueled by a love for speed and a passion for the water. It was built on determination, family values, and a constant drive to make things better. The founder, Rick Lee, got his start tinkering with boats and racing, a passion that led him to meet his wife, Pamela. Her father’s challenge to “go start your own boat company” led to a $100,000 loan and the birth of Centurion in Santa Ana.
Moving to Merced, the company faced an early economic crash that hit the boat business hard. But Centurion adapted. They started focusing on tournament boats, developing innovations like the “True Track” system to create consistent wakes. Then, they saw wakeboarding on the horizon and decided to pivot. They created the “Wave,” a wakeboard-specific boat with the first-ever built-in ballast tank. It was during the testing of this boat that a serendipitous moment occurred: an employee, Tim Lopes, started wake surfing behind the boat without a rope, completely by accident. This moment was an epiphany, showing them the future of towed water sports.
The Wake Surfing Revolution and a New Era
That accidental surf session changed everything. Centurion shifted its focus entirely to wake surfing, pouring all its marketing and R&D into perfecting the sport. Today, wake surfing is what you see most often on the water, a testament to Centurion’s foresight. By 2014, Rick Lee knew the company needed a new generation to carry its mission forward. This led to the transition of leadership, bringing in new talent to guide Centurion into its next chapter.
Building a Culture of Excellence
When Correct Craft purchased Centurion and Supreme in 2015, the company’s mission became “Making Lives Better.” This philosophy permeates everything they do. The leadership team focused on changing the company culture, fostering transparency, setting clear goals, and investing in their employees. This shift transformed Centurion from a struggling company into a highly profitable one, with employees who are not just workers but a dedicated team with immense pride in their craft.
From R&D to the Water: Product Innovation
The “RARI” series, launched in 2016, was a game-changer. It wasn’t just a new model; it introduced custom stitching, unique accents, and patented features like the “Silent Stinger” and the “Opti-V Hull.” The Opti-V Hull, in particular, was a massive leap forward, allowing for precise manipulation of the wake’s size and contour. This innovation wasn’t just born in a design studio; it involved a lot of hands-on, trial-and-error work, shaping fiberglass and making adjustments until it was perfect.
The Heart of Centurion: Family and Community
Centurion Boats thrives on a family-like atmosphere. Employees genuinely enjoy coming to work, surrounded by good people and taking pride in what they build. This unique bond is evident to anyone who visits the factory. Many employees have been with the company for decades, their experience and dedication shaping the next generation of builders. This joy and pride translate directly into higher quality and more creative boat designs.
Beyond the factory walls, Centurion is deeply involved in making a difference. They partner with organizations like Operation Wake Surf, using their boats as platforms to provide positive experiences for underprivileged children and those in foster care. Their goal is to impact lives, one boat, one experience at a time.
The Gold Standard: Celebrating 50 Years with a Look to the Future
As Centurion celebrates its 50th anniversary, they’re not just looking back; they’re setting a “gold standard” for the future. The limited edition 50th-anniversary boats are a tribute to their legacy, incorporating design elements from the past with cutting-edge innovation. These aren’t just trophies; they represent the culmination of 50 years of vision, customer feedback, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Centurion is still growing, still innovating, and still focused on making lives better, one wave at a time.
